The Package - What You Get!

The complete Parent Coaching Cards package consists of:

Parent Coaching Cards, a set of 20 4" x 6" coated cards with a full color illustration on one side and a kid-friendly, coping message on the other. Each card depicts a social or emotional skill in language that is easily understandable to children from third grade and up. Younger children often need parents to read the text to them, but this can be minimized by parents taping the messages for children to listen on their own.
Here are the titles of each card:

1. Thinking Side And Reacting Side
2. Can't Always Get What You Want!
3. Quit The Clowning!
4. Step Into Your Cantaloupe Skin!
5. Show Your Love For People Not Just For Stuff!
6. Don't Trust Your Jealous Feelings!
7. When Words Pop Out Watch Out!
8. Cooperation!
9. Don't Take The Bait!
10. Be Flexible!
11. Say It And Show It When You Get It!
12. Beat The Fear
13. Know When To Back Off!
14. Stay Tuned In!
15. Find The Brakes!
16. Watch Out For Your Hooks!
17. Repair The Tear
18. The Importance Of Quick Recovery
19. Slow To Success
20. Think And Plan Ahead

The Coaching Card Kids Coloring Book presents each of the 20 illustrations on blown-up 8 1/2" x 11" perforated pages. It developed as a supplement to the program after many children showed an interest in writing and illustrating cards of their own. The coloring book encourages this active involvement, thereby increasing the benefits of Parent Coaching Cards. Many children choose to "personalize" the pages by adding their own drawings, cut-outs from magazines representing their own experiences, or by pasting photographs of scenes and people in their lives.

Here's an example of one of the pages from the coloring book...

The Parent Instruction Packet begins with a brief explanation of the Parent Coaching model and the parents' role in guiding children toward improved social and emotional skills. Directions address using the cards with children and individualizing the approach to different ages and temperaments. The rationale for each card is described, and suggestions are offered for how and when to use specific cards. Here's a glimpse:

"In the midst of an emotional outburst, children must first regain control over their emotions before any learning can take place. This card (The Importance of Quick Recovery) offers a means to do so. The emotional skill of recovery is a vital asset because it stems the tide of emotional fall-out. You can assist by first referring to this skill during outbursts, and thereby making the recovery of control the central focus of your efforts."
